Gabe Salazar

As a teenager, Gabe Salazar struggled to find his identity. In a family that often did not make ends meet financially, Gabe was transferred from one school to another. At each new school, he ‘reinvented’ himself to fit in with whatever was popular and trendy at that location.

Now, Gabe uses these life experiences to help students dealing with the same issues.

“I wish someone would have told me that there’s hope, and not to give up,” he says. “I want to tell that to students now. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the downs as much as the ups because there’s something to learn and be enjoyed in both.”

The power behind Gabe’s message is that it is solutionary. He doesn’t just entertain; he provides solutions to students’ problems from his own experiences. He tells them that it’s not too late to turn things around for themselves, and his own life is the proof of that.

As one of only a handful of Latino speakers on the national level, Gabe and his urban speaking style stand out.

“I’m very teen-culture driven,” he says. “No matter where I go, the teen culture understands all of the things I’m saying. I keep things fast-paced and high-energy.”

He believes a good message is like a good movie or a good song–it is relevant and it’s something you can hear over and over again. That’s why students are drawn to him and his message. He keeps it genuine.

“I want them to know that there’s hope,” he says, “that they should never stop believing in themselves.”
