“You can’t always control what life will throw you way,” says Jeffrey Dean. “You can control what you choose to do with your life.”
Jeffrey Dean realized the impact he could have on students during his career as a musician in Nashville, Tennessee. He began by reaching out through his concerts, telling stories between songs. He noticed these stories connected with students on a deeper level than his music.
He turned his attention to speaking. Over the past 15 years, Jeffrey Dean has reached students nationwide. Using personal experiences, he encourages teens to actively consider their decisions and the consequences they will have on their hopes and dreams. His speaking style is both engaging and serious. He doesn’t back down from the tough issues, but presents them in a way that encourages. “I’m in your face, but on your side,” he says.
One of the messages that Jeffrey Dean tackles is the use and abuse of technology. He encourages the positive use of technology while warning about the dangers of sexting and cyber bullying. He emphasizes the need to treat each other with respect and dignity in all situations. Jeffrey Dean also teaches parents about safe technology use in their family. He encourages parents not to give up on their efforts to understand their teen’s new methods of communication, but to actively engage, learn more, set healthy boundaries, and make their expectations clear. Parents appreciate his practical, step-by-step approach to a subject on which they often feel lost and even fearful.
Most importantly, he wants every student to know that their life has value and that it is never too late to do the right thing.
